Our practicum training program is available to students enrolled in a graduate program in psychology or a related mental health field. Their practicum placements are made through a partnership with their graduate program, and they receive academic credit for their training. These are unpaid positions.
Our practicum students mainly provide individual psychotherapy, though some have had an interest in working with couples as well. We also have the opportunity for practicum students to run psycho-educational groups. In connection with their direct clinical services, practicum students write progress notes, create treatment plans, and conduct case management tasks, such as consultations and linking clients with additional resources. In addition, practicum students meet weekly with their primary supervisor for individual supervision and as a group with their training cohort for group supervision and/or didactic seminar. Practicum students have also been involved with initial screenings.
Practicum positions are for graduate school credit and are unpaid.
Each graduate institution has a different requirement for the number of hours, months, semesters, and/or quarters of practicum training that need to be completed to be eligible for graduation. We work with each student and their graduate institution to ensure that the student's experience meets their school's requirements.
We do require practicum students to commit to a minimum of 6 months, and most practicum placements are 9 to 12 months in length. Additionally, practicum positions are a minimum of 10 hours per week, and participants are expected to ramp up to a minimum of 5 hours of direct client contact per week. Typically caseloads range from 6 to 8 clients, couples, and/or groups per week.
If this sounds like a good fit for you, you are encouraged to apply by submitting the following application materials to Jasmine@CaliforniaWomensTherapy.com:
“Prior to seeking a practicum site I imagined one that was challenging and geared towards growing my skill set. During my time at CWT I quickly realized my expectations were going to be surpassed! The onboarding training, both in-house and third party, provided constructive and celebratory criticism, growth opportunities/exposure to counseling populations and continuous unwavering support and encouragement from supervisors Dr. Jordyn & Dr. Deepti were unmatched. To say my expectations were exceeded would be an understatement. I proudly reflect on my practicum experience with gratitude and consider my time spent there as the BEST part of my journey in completing my Master’s in Professional Counseling.”
